To my son,
You smile, cheer, laugh and clap your hands.
You throw your toys across the room, with all your might.
You put your breakfast bowl on your head and say "hat!"
You run laps around the living room and climb onto windowsills.
Some days I find myself saying, "no!", "don't!" and "stop!"
My mind fills with worry and doubt.
Other days I say "yes" a little more and "no" a little less.
These are the best days.
It fills my heart and soul to see your joy, when you bang wooden spoons on pots, tip water everywhere and stick your fingers in dough.
It lifts my spirits to see you sit in the middle of the herb bed, sniffing flowers and getting your little hands dirty.
It gives me hope, when you share your food, kiss your daddy on his cheek and point to butterflies in the garden.
It overwhelms me with love, when I see you leafing through books, with your brow furrowed in concentration.
It reminds me, to just sit and pause and just be. To not worry about the little things in life. To let go and be free.
These moments are just that - moments. They are fleeting and are gone in an instant.
You have taught me this and I am thankful.
Now go and play my son, be wild, be you, be free. My Little Bird.
